North End

During 1977-78, I served as an Artist in Residence in the North End of Boston. My goal was to work with the local youth and instruct them in various aspects of photography and video production. I lived on Salem Street in the North End and worked with each of the local community centers.

In collaboration with the young adults of that community, we produced a forty-minute videotape documentary that observed and described the daily activities and festivities during that year. Shot with a Sony Porta Pak, the 1/2" open reel video tape was transferred to Mini DV and available on DVD.

With material support from the Polaroid Foundation, I also curated a photo exhibition of SX-70 images made by the members of our workshop that documented their daily lives and environment. These are some examples of their work.

You can also watch a segment from the film The North End, and learn more about the associated book and DVD.
